Scones Competition Rules

There will be two categories in this year’s Scones Competition: Traditional and Modern. Scones will be judged on Taste, Texture, and Appearance.

Category Definitions

Traditional Scones
Traditional scones are rooted in early Scottish baking, originally prepared as a large, round, flat cake made with simple ingredients and baked on a griddle (or girdle). Once baked, the scone was typically cut into triangular sections for serving. For this competition, Traditional scones should reflect this classic style in both form and flavor, emphasizing simplicity and restraint. Entries should avoid added fruits, flavorings, fillings, or embellishments that materially alter the traditional taste or character.
Modern Scones
Modern scones follow the basic structure of a plain scone while allowing bakers to show creativity through added ingredients. Fruits, raisins, berries, jams, spices, glazes, and other enhancements are welcome in this category.
Entrants may select the category they believe best fits their scones; however,
judges reserve the right to reclassify entries if the ingredients or presentation do not align with the selected category.
